Law Minister Anisul Huq on Thursday said the government is not doing anything to harass Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus rather if an individual commits crime, he/she must be brought to book.
“Despite the evidence, it is being propagated abroad that all the allegations against Dr Yunus are false and we are doing this only to harass him,” he said at a press conference held at the secretariat in Dhaka.
“The government is not harassing Dr Yunus by filing any false cases against him. The case was filed by the workers, the department [Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments] responsible for protecting the rights of the workers.”
The minister said no one is above the law and individuals must stand trial if they commit crimes.
On 1 January, the Dhaka Third Labour Court sentenced Dr Yunus, also the chairman of Grameen Telecom, and its three other top officials to six-month imprisonment in a case filed for violating labour laws.
