Beijing engaged with Myanmar for Rohingya repatriation

Staff Reporter:

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen yesterday said that Beijing has been engaged with Myan-mar to have a ceasefire in Rakhine state to pave the way for Rohingya repatriation.
“You must be aware that under Chinese mediation, we wish to have a cease fire in the Rakhine State,” he told reporters after a courtesy call with foreign minister Dr Hasan Mahmud at the foreign ministry here.
He said that cease fire was taken place in the past in Rakhine State under the mediation of China.
“Myanmar government already has three cease fire agreements. We wish to have another cease fire in the Rakhine state so that the mediation process for the repatriation can be started,” he said.
Regarding the Rohingya repatriation, he appealed all to be confident on the ongoing tripartite collabora-tion among China, Bangladesh and Myanmar.
“Repatriation issue is something we discussed quite deeply. We understand, now we face difficult days. But we need to be confident,” said the envoy.
Regarding his first meeting with the new Bangladesh foreign minister, the ambassador said, they dis-cussed the current and the future of Bangladesh-China relationship along with Rohingya issue.
He said that Beijing would continue to play its role and hoped that Bangladesh and Myanmar will remain engaged to make arrangements so that the Rohingyas can return to Myanmar as soon as possible.
Responding to a question on Teesta project, the ambassador said China is committed to help Bangladesh in this regard but it requires proposal from the Bangladesh side first.
“We continue to engage with the Bangladesh side (in this regards) ,” he said.
The Chinese Ambassador said they expect better future and deep cooperation with Bangladesh.
