Metro to add more coaches to cope with passenger pressure

Staff Reporter:

Passenger pressure in Metro Rail has increased significantly with the capital’s only metro service extending operation from morning to night on the Uttara-Motijheel route, prompting the operators to consider adding more coaches.

Currently, 8 trains operate during peak hours and 7 during the off-peak hours from 7:30am to 8:40pm. It takes some 33 minutes to travel from Uttara to Motijheel on the metro rail, which is available every 10 minutes.

“We have a number of plans including adding more coaches for passengers,” Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited Company Secretary Mohammad Abdur Rouf told the Daily Sun on Wednesday.

“We have many trains in our depot and are thinking of increasing the number of coaches,” he said, adding that they are also considering making the trips available every 3-5 minutes.

Now 2.50 lakh passengers are traveling every day, said Abdur Rouf.

The work of Metrorail started in 2012 to reduce traffic congestion in the capital and to make the travel of city dwellers comfortable and faster.

Main construction work of metro rail started in June 2016 and opened for the public in December 2022. Initially the metro was opened from Uttara to Agargaon and later more stations on the Uttara North to Motijheel route were gradually added.
