Commerce reporter:
Bangladesh Bank (BB) spokesperson Arief Hossain
Khan today said there is no risk to any type of transaction at present,
assuring the public that no bank website had been hacked.
“None of the banks’ websites has been hacked, and there is no risk to any
type of transaction, including digital transactions, at the moment,” he told
BSS.
The Bangladesh Bank website, which had remained offline since Thursday amid
concerns over potential cyberattacks, was restored and reopened at 8:00 am
today.
The central bank said the website had been restored as today was a working
day, enabling it to monitor the site round the clock.
The precautionary measures were taken following a cybersecurity alert issued
by the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) and relevant agencies
after two serious security vulnerabilities were identified in PHP, a widely
used programming language for web applications.
In a joint alert issued on October 21, the agencies warned that attackers
could exploit the vulnerabilities to execute malicious code on affected
servers.
They advised organisations to temporarily disconnect vulnerable web
applications from the internet if security updates could not be applied
promptly.
