Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered action against a doctor found smoking in his room during a surprise visit to Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute in Agargaon in the capital yesterday.
The prime minister also found the doctor’s room in an unhygienic condition and instructed the hospital authorities to take immediate action against him, said his Assistant Press Secretary KM Nazmul Haque.
He visited the hospital this afternoon, inspecting different departments and observing the working envi-ronment of doctors and health workers as well as the overall cleanliness of the institution.
The prime minister found Associate Professor Rafiqul Islam smoking in his room during the visit and noticed that the room was not properly maintained.
Expressing strong displeasure over such conduct and the unhygienic environment at an important healthcare institution such as a children’s hospital, he immediately instructed the hospital’s Board of Management Chairman Prof Dr AKM Azizul Haque to take action against the doctor.
Following the prime minister’s instruction, Dr Rafiqul Islam was placed under temporary suspension.
The prime minister also stressed the need to maintain a hygienic environment, ensure cleanliness and ensure that doctors and all others concerned performed their duties responsibly.
