The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 yesterday convicted and sentenced seven individuals, including Awami League (AL) General Secretary and former minister Obaidul Quader, to death for their roles in crimes against humanity committed during the July 2024 Mass Uprising.
The three-member second tribunal, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, pronounced the judgment this afternoon.
The other convicts in the case are- AL Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Executive Committee Member Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, Jubo League General Secretary Md Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Bangladesh Chhatra League Pres-ident Md Saddam Hossain and its General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.
At the same time, in yesterday’s judgment, the tribunal ordered confiscation of 50 percent of all movable and immovable properties of Obaidul Quader, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Mohammad Ali Arafat, Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash and Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil.
The tribunal also ordered that appropriate compensation be provided to the persons killed and in-jured during July-August 2024, or their family members, from the proceeds of the sale of the con-fiscated properties through the July Foundation or any other statutory organization.
All the convicts including Quader are still at large and were tried in absentia.
Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam, along with other prosecutors, was present at the courtroom dur-ing the pronouncement of judgment, while Advocate M Hasan Imam was there for Obaidul Quad-er, Nasim and Arafat. Advocate Ishrat Jahan was present on for Jubo League and Chhatra League leaders.
Earlier on August 17, the second tribunal had kept the case on CAV (curia advisari vult), a Latin legal term meaning “the court awaits judgment”, as it concluded the arguments in the case on that day. The prosecution, in its arguments, sought the maximum punishment for the accused and con-fiscation of their properties.
The second tribunal on December 18, 2025, issued arrest warrants against the seven accused. The ICT-2 issued the order, taking the formal charge filed against the seven into cognisance.
