A unit of the Adani power plant in India’s Jharkhand has shut down due to a technical fault, further worsening load-shedding in Bangladesh.
The 1,600MW plant had been producing limited power for about a month due to coal shortages. Output had risen after coal supplies improved on Thursday evening, exceeding 1,400MW before the shutdown around midnight. It has since fallen to below 750MW.
Officials said a boiler problem may take around 48 hours to cool before repairs can begin, meaning power generation could take several days to recover.
Bangladesh is already facing a severe gas shortage, which has reduced gas-fired generation by up to 1,500MW. Several coal-fired plants, including Payra and Rampal, are also operating below capacity due to technical problems or coal shortages.
Load-shedding peaked at 3,557MW at 3pm on Thursday, while more than 2,500MW of unmet demand was reported across the country on Friday morning.
