A Dhaka court on Thursday recorded the confessional statement of accused Sohel Rana, 41, in a case filed over the killing of Ismail Hossain, 49, and dumping his body on the elevated expressway in the capital’s Banani area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Kamal Uddin recorded the statement following a petition filed by police, said a prosecution division source.
Earlier, the accused was produced before the court after completion of his four-day police remand.
Later, the Investigation Officer and Banani Police Station Sub-Inspector Nazrul Islam Talukder sought to keep him in jail custody and record his confessional statement.
In the application seeking the recording of the statement, the IO said the accused confessed to his involvement in the incident during intensive interrogation in police remand, which would help in the trial of the case and ensure justice for the complainant, the application said.
Earlier, on 4 September, the victim Ismail Hossain left his village home in Jamalpur for Gazipur at around 4:30am, carrying Tk5 lakh in cash from the sale of land in his village, along with various food items.
His son, Md Hasan, was waiting for him at Jirani bus stand in Gazipur. However, Hasan could not contact his father as his mobile phone was found switched off.
Later, a body was recovered from the road between pillars 179 and 180 on the Kakoli-Kuril section of the elevated expressway under Banani Police Station.
No cash or the goods that Ismail had reportedly brought from his village home were found with the body, which was later identified as that of Ismail Hossain. Following the incident, his son Md Hasan filed a murder case with Banani Police Station.
