Research on global demand for fish underway

A Correspondent:

Mymensingh: Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid yesterday said the govern-ment is conducting research to identify the types of fish in high demand in the global markets and those with greater export potentials as well.
“Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficiency in fish production and currently has some surplus output . . . Initiatives have been taken to expand fish exports through the introduction of modern technologies and safe production systems in aquaculture,” the minister told a function here.
He was speaking at a program as the chief guest for the distribution of improved fish fry developed by the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) in Mymensingh yesterday.
Noting that Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficiency in fish production and currently has some surplus output, Amin Ur Rashid said initiatives have been taken to expand fish exports through the introduction of modern technologies and safe production systems in aquaculture.
He said ensuring safe and quality feed as well as production standards are essential to compete in the international markets.
Replying to a question from journalists, Amin Ur Rashid said the demand of fish farmers in the My-mensingh region for electricity at subsidized agricultural rates is reasonable.
He would discuss the matter with the Ministry of Power, the minister added.
The minister also said the demand for safe food is becoming increasingly important worldwide. There-fore, the government is attaching the highest priority to the production of safe food.
Earlier, he visited BFRI and exchanged views with its officials, said a release.
BFRI Director General Dr Anuradha Bhadra chaired the meeting, while Fisheries and Livestock Secre-tary Md Delwar Hossain attended as a special guest.
