DB arrests three with fake notes from Dhaka, Gazipur

Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested three members of an inter-district counterfeit currency smuggling gang along with fake notes worth Tk34 lakh and equipment used for producing counterfeit money in separate drives from Uttara and Gazipur.

Additional Police Commissioner (DB) Mohammad Shafiqul Islam shared the information at a press briefing at DMP Media Center on Thursday noon.

The arrestees are Md Mujibur Rahman, 38, Md Dulal Mridha, 40 and Md Mamun, 25.

According to DB Uttara Division, acting on secret information, police first arrested Md Mujibur Rahman from in front of Somobay Bazar (BDR) Market under Uttara East Police Station area around 12:30pm on Wednesday.

At the time of arrest, Tk4 lakh in counterfeit notes and Tk40,000 in cash from fake note sales were recovered from his possession.

Following his statement, DB later conducted another drive at Basan area under Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) around 2:05pm the same day and arrested Dulal Mridha and Mamun.

During the operation, police recovered an additional Tk30 lakh in counterfeit notes along with equipment used for producing fake currency.

The seized items include a laptop, three color printers, a roll of golden foil paper, 200 security tags, watermark printed blank papers, 100 sheets printed with Tk1,000 notes on one side, two 2-litre bottles of liquid glue, a cutter and two dies used for watermark embedding.

Police said the arrested individuals are active members of an inter-district counterfeit currency production gang and had long been producing fake notes for distribution in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur and other areas of the country.

In primary interrogation, they admitted that they distributed counterfeit notes through associates and had planned to circulate fake currency in cattle markets and shopping areas ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.

The DB chief also said the accused have multiple cases filed against them in different districts. A case has been filed at Uttara East Police Station under the Special Powers Act.
