Court orders probe into case against NICVD director, 10 others

Staff Reporter:

A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered an investigation into the allegations in a case filed against 11 people, including Professor Dr Abdul Wadud Chowdhury, director of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and Hospital, over a patient’s death allegedly caused by medical negligence and the dominance of broker syndicates.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ismail passed the order, directing the officer-in-charge (OC) of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station to investigate the allegations and submit a report by 16 June.

Earlier in the day, the victim’s son Abu Huraira filed the complaint before the court. The court recorded the complainant’s statement and kept the order pending.

Later in the afternoon, the court took the complaint into cognisance and passed the order, complainant’s lawyer Advocate Moksedul Hasan Mondal confirmed.

Other accused in the case include Shahid, Asif and Samiul, ward boys of NICVD, Mashiur Rahman Lavlu, security guard Saidur, Dr Sirajul, director of Hridoy General Hospital Dr SMF Nirab Hossain, the hospital’s manager, assistant manager and receptionist Junaed.

According to the complaint, ward boy Shahid and others allegedly persuaded Abu Huraira to move his father Jinnat Ali from NICVD Hospital to Hridoy General Hospital on 26 February.

The accused allegedly took money for the transfer, tests and treatment, and later demanded a large bill. When the complainant tried to take his father away, he was allegedly assaulted, and the accused allegedly stopped the patient’s treatment until partial payment was made.

Jinnat Ali was later taken back to NICVD Hospital, where he died. The complaint also alleges that Abu Huraira was threatened and assaulted when he tried to file complaints against the accused.
