BNP women MPs offer doa at Zia, Khaleda’s mazar

Staff Reporter:

Newly elected women Members of Parliament (MPs) from reserved seats of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) yesterday paid tribute to party founder Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia at their mazar in the capital.
Led by BNP Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the 49 women MPs visited the mausoleum premises and placed wreaths, recalling the contributions of the late leaders.
The MPs were sworn in on May 3 at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban after being elected unopposed from re-served seats in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed administered the oath, while Prime Minister and Leader of the House Tarique Rahman was present at the ceremony.
Out of the 50 reserved seats in Parliament, 36 have been secured by BNP candidates.
Following the swearing-in, the MPs signed the official oath papers and the parliamentary register.
Talking to journalists after the tribute, Mirza Fakhrul said the visit was a gesture of respect to the party’s founding leadership. “We hope the women MPs elected from reserved seats will play a meaningful role in making the Jatiya Sangsad more effective and functional,” he said.
Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni also attended the programme.
