Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed yesterday announced a comprehensive plan to modernize the Bangla-desh Coast Guard (BCG) and significantly expand its manpower to enhance maritime security and opera-tional effectiveness.
Speaking at a program marking Coast Guard Day 2026 and the 31st founding anniversary at its head-quarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, he said the government is prioritizing technological advancement within the force.
Three surveillance drones equipped with a ground control station have already been inducted, boosting monitoring capabilities across coastal and inland waterways, he said.
He noted that with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, construction of one multi-role response vessel and two offshore patrol vessels is progressing.
In addition, he said an agreement has been signed with Khulna Shipyard to procure bulletproof high-speed boats.
The minister also announced plans to establish a modern dockyard in Gazaria, Munshiganj, to strengthen maintenance and repair facilities.
A project is underway to replace nine ageing vessels with new patrol vessels to be built at local ship-yards.
Looking ahead, he said the government plans to procure helicopters, advanced maritime surveillance systems, and rescue drones to further enhance rapid response and surveillance capabilities.
On manpower, he revealed that a proposal has been taken to increase the Coast Guard’s strength to around 10,000 personnel, which is expected to significantly improve operational efficiency.
He further said that land acquisition is ongoing in Mirpur’s Baunia area and Purbachal to address ac-commodation needs for Coast Guard members.

He has also commended the Bangladesh Coast Guard for its vital role in maintaining law and order in the country’s maritime and coastal areas, describing the force as a “symbol of trust” for the nation.
