The government has taken a decision to impose a 58-day ban on all types of fishing in the Bay of Bengal from April 15 to June 11 to protect marine resources, said Fisheries and Livestock Minster Amin Ur Rashid on Monday.
The government is committed to increasing sustainable Hilsa production and making the fish affordable for ordinary people and for this the government is implementing timely and practical initiatives to con-serve Hilsa and ensure sustainable production, he said while speaking at a press conference at the Secre-tariat.
Measures include conserving juvenile Hilsa (jatka), banning fishing during designated periods, establish-ing protected areas and enforcing the Fisheries Conservation Act. These initiatives have steadily in-creased Hilsa production, which reached 5,00,000 metric tons in the 2024-25 fiscal year, the minister said.
