11 sent to jail over vandalism, looting at Uttara shopping mall

A Dhaka court on Thursday sent 11 people to jail in a case filed over vandalism and looting at Uttara Square Shopping and Commercial Complex.

The accused are Md Monir Alam, Md Mojibur Rahman, Md Hridoy, Md Monjurul, Md Mohabbat Ali, Shah Poran, Md Shakil, Md Rashidul Islam, Md Saju, Md Liton and Jihad.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter passed the order as police produced them before the court and pleaded to keep them behind bars till the end of probe.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin on 17 March placed the 11 accused on a two-day remand.

Police arrested the suspects on 16 March on suspicion of their involvement with the incident.

According to the case statement, a rickshaw puller became involved in an altercation with a security guard of the market located in Uttara Sector-13 at around 9:00pm on 15 March.

At one stage, a group of unruly rickshaw pullers allegedly attacked the security personnel, attacked the shopping complex and carried out looting.

The accused allegedly looted goods worth approximately Tk15 lakh from two shops in the market. They also reportedly attacked police personnel when law enforcers attempted to bring the situation under control.
