Staff Reporter:
President Mohammed Shahabuddin has sparked discussion after ending his speech with the slogan “Bangladesh Zindabad” at a state event in Dhaka.
A video of his remarks has circulated widely on social media, drawing mixed reactions and debate.
During the tenure of the previous Awami League government, when Shahabuddin assumed the presidency, he was known to conclude his speeches with the slogan “Joy Bangla”. His use of “Bangladesh Zindabad” this time has therefore attracted particular attention.
Following the fall of the Awami League government, the president had not been seen delivering speeches at state events during the 18-month tenure of the interim government.
Friday’s appearance marked his first address at an official function since the new BNP-led government took office.
The President spoke at an event organised by the Ministry of Textiles and Jute to mark National Jute Day 2026 at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital.
Prior to the programme, he inaugurated a nine-day Jute and Diversified Jute Products Fair at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy premises.
