Govt preparing to deal fuel crises amid global instability

Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood yesterday said that the govern-ment took some preparations to deal with possible temporary electricity and fuel crises amid global in-stability.
“Due to the ongoing unrest in the Middle East, there is a concern for temporary crisis in the country’s energy sector,” he said while addressing an emergency review meeting to deal with the emerging situa-tion.
The minister chaired the meeting seeking cooperation of the common people to use electricity and fuel economical.
The meeting also requested electricity users to avoid unnecessary illuminations at shopping malls, com-munity centers and other places specially lighting and excessive usage of fuel.
The government instructed traders not to sell diesel and petrol in the open markets, as law enforcement agencies will monitor the matter, according to the meeting official.
District administration, police and Border Guard Bangladesh have already been asked to take necessary steps to prevent fuel smuggling.
However, the instructions have been issued with utmost caution so that there is no public suffering dur-ing the holy month of Ramadan.
The ministry has already taken all possible measures to minimize negative impact of the global situation. Initiatives have been taken to procure fuel from all sources to keep fuel procurement normal.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit, energy secretary, BPC Chairman, BPDB chairman and concerned officials were present at the meeting.
