Staff Reporter:
A Dhaka court on Thursday placed a man named Masudur Rahman on a two-day remand over alleged militant activities in Malaysia.
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order after police produced the accused before the court seeking a five-day remand.
During the hearing, state prosecutor Harun-or-Rashid appeared in favour of the remand petition, stating that it is primarily understood that the accused was involved in militant activities in Malaysia and was arrested there, which hampered the reputation of the country.
To obtain further information about the accused, his previous activities, whether he was involved in any militancy, and to identify the financier behind this, remand is needed.
The court then asked the accused why he was arrested in Malaysia. The accused replied that he was arrested because he posted about the Taliban on social media. He also said that he liked their activities.
The court then replied that by doing these, he put himself and others in danger. When asked, the accused said that he worked at a plastic company in Malaysia.
According to the remand petition, the accused Masudur Rahman (30), while in Malaysia, was detained by Malaysian police for allegedly posting videos of banned militant groups– Hamas, the Taliban and Al-Qaeda– on Facebook.
The Malaysian court deported him to Bangladesh on 25 February after completion of his sentence. He was arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, and police sought remand for further interrogation over suspected militant links.
