The government on Tuesday appointed Humayra Sultana, additional secretary at the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, as the new managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Ltd.
With the appointment, she becomes the first woman in history to serve in the leading positions of the national flag carrier.
The ministry’s Biman-1 wing issued an order in this regard giving Humayra the top roles at Biman in addition to her current duties. Humayra would continue to serve in the additional roles until a dedicated official is appointed to the posts, the order stated.
The government has also cancelled the contract with outgoing managing director Shafiqur Rahman as he has been sent to prison on allegations of abusing his domestic worker.
Shafiqur, along with his wife, were arrested on Monday in a case filed by the domestic worker’s father the previous day. A Dhaka court later rejected their bail applications and sent them to jail.
