EC bans watercraft movement on polling day

Staff Reporter:

Ahead of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election and referendum, the Election Commission (EC) has imposed restrictions on the movement of certain watercrafts on the polling day as well as before and after it.
In a letter issued here on Tuesday, the EC said in view of the polls, the movement of launches and en-gine boats – except those operating on designated routes – will remain suspended from midnight of Feb-ruary 11 to midnight of February 12.
However, the restriction may be relaxed with permission from the Returning Officer for contesting can-didates and their polling agents, as well as accredited local and foreign observers, it read.
It also clarified that the restriction will not be applicable for the accredited journalists engaged in elec-tion coverage, officials and employees on election duty, members of law enforcement agencies, and wa-tercraft used for emergency services including ambulances, fire service, electricity, gas, postal and tele-communication operations.
Authorities may also take necessary measures to ease restrictions for ports, emergency supply of goods, and other special requirements on major waterways.
Besides, watercraft serving as the sole means of transport for voters and the general public, along with long-distance vessels, will remain outside the purview of the restriction.
In consideration of local needs during the election and referendum, District Magistrates and Metropolitan Police Commissioners have also been empowered to impose or relax the restriction where necessary, the letter also read.
