The National Citizen Party (NCP) on Monday strongly condemned and protested the attack on Ariful Islam, the 10-party alliance candidate in Dhaka-18 and senior joint convener of the party.
The attack took place in Dumni Nurpara area under Khilkhet police station on Monday morning while Ariful Islam was visiting an orphanage and carrying out election campaigning, NCP said in a press re-lease.
The NCP alleged that the assault was carried out by a group of miscreants led by local BNP leader Didar Molla, leaving at least two alliance activists seriously injured.
Terming the use of violence in electoral competition a grave threat to democracy, the NCP demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved in the attack.
It also urged law enforcement agencies to ensure the security of candidates in election areas.
