Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Wednesday reiterated that all political parties need to demon-strate commitment to have a free, fair and violence-free election.
“If they (all political parties) make such a commitment, only we can expect a free and fair election,” he told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Foreign Minister Momen made the remarks when a reporter wanted to know whether the government reached any negotiation referring to a kind of “changed” tone from the US, European Union and Japan on Bangladesh’s election affairs.
Momen said Bangladesh is dealing with a number of challenges including climate change and election is another challenge.
The Foreign Minister said the political parties in the country should have active initiatives regarding elections.
He, however, said the government does not need any suggestions from other countries.
Momen said all should feel proud of the voters’ turnout in the Bangladesh election while they see poor turnout in elections in the US and European countries.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Momen briefed the media on the 6th Indian Ocean Conference that will be held on May 12-13.
