Low over Bay turns into depression

Staff Reporter:

The well-marked low over west-central Bay and adjoining area has moved north-northwestwards and intensified into a depression over the same area.

It is likely to move north-northwestwards and intensify further into a deep depression, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said in a special bulletin on Wednesday.

The weather system was centered at 3pm about 915km southwest of Chattogram port, 865km southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 800km southwest of Mongla port, and 795km southwest of Payra port.

“Under its influence, steep pressure gradient persists over the north Bay. Gusty weather may affect the maritime ports, the north Bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh,” read the bulletin.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 44km of the depression centre is about 40km per hour rising to 50km per hour in gusts or squalls.

The sea will remain moderate near the depression centre.

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal number three.

All fishing boats and trawlers over the north Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice, so that they can take shelter on short notice.
