NCP, Bangladesh National League to get EC registration, 12 more under review

Staff Reporter:

The Election Commission (EC) has finalised the National Citizens Party (NCP) and Bangladesh National League for registration. EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed disclosed the information at a press conference held Wednesday evening at the commission secretariat in Agargaon of the capital.

He said a total of 143 parties had applied for registration. After the initial screening, 22 parties underwent further scrutiny. Among them, two parties met the required conditions. However, due to complications regarding the election symbol of the NCP, the party has been asked to propose a new one. In contrast, the proposed symbol of the Bangladesh National League has been found valid.

The EC secretary said that additional field investigation and scrutiny are required for several other parties. These include Bangladesh Aam Janagan Party, Bangladesh Janata Party, and the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Shahjahan Siraj faction).
In addition, as per a court ruling, Bangladesh Nezam-e-Islam Party is also considered eligible for registration.

He further said that nine more parties are under extensive review. These are Am Janatar Dal, Bangladesh Ganatantrik Party (BGP), Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist), Bangladesh Justice and Development Party, Bhashani Janashakti Party, Bangladesh Bekar Mukti Parishad, Janatar Dal, Moulik Bangla, and Janata Party Bangladesh.

On the other hand, the applications of seven parties have been rejected due to insufficient documentation. These are Forward Party, Bangladesh Communist Party (Marxist CPBM), Bangladesh Reformist Party (BRP), Bangladesh Bekar Samaj, Bangladesh Solution Party, Notun Bangladesh Party, and Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam and Nezam-e-Islami Party.

According to EC sources, the final list of registered political parties will be announced through an official public notification after the scrutiny is completed.
