Govt to procure 40,000 body cameras for police

Staff Reporter:

The Advisers Council Committee on Economic Affairs (ACCEA) has approved the procurement pro-posal of around 40,000 body-worn cameras for police to enhance security at voting booths during the upcoming general election.
The approval was given at the 31st meeting of the ACCEA held at Cabinet Division yesterday with Fi-nance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed in the chair.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, Salehuddin stated that the procurement process for the body cam-eras will be handled through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
“The police will be given 40,000 body cameras during the national parliamentary election. The proposal to buy these cameras has been approved. They must be brought in quickly,” he said.
Replying to a question, he explained that procuring through UNDP ensures certainty regarding both the quality and the price of the equipment.
He affirmed that by using UNDP, the government would not have to negotiate with any party regarding the purchase.
