BUET student Sony murder convict Togor remanded over arms trade

Staff Reporter:

A Dhaka court on Saturday placed Mushfiq Uddin Togor, a convict in the murder of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Sabekun Nahar Sony, on a two-day remand for his alleged involvement in the arms trade.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq passed the order after the police produced the accused before the court, seeking a five-day remand.

According to the remand petition, preliminary information and evidence suggest the involvement of the accused in the incident.

The police sought the remand to uncover the mystery of the case, obtain information about the seized weapon, determine whether he possessed additional weapons or not, and identify if any other individuals were involved in the incident, read the petition.

Togor was arrested in Dhaka’s Azimpur on Thursday. During the arrest, the Rapid Action Battalion seized a 32mm revolver, a magazine, a wooden pistol grip, 155 rounds of .22 rifle ammunition, a 7.62mm misfire bullet, an empty shotgun cartridge, two masks, and two mobile phones.

On 20 August 2020, Togor was released from Kashimpur prison after serving a prolonged jail term since his arrest on 24 June 2002 in connection with the murder of Sony, a second-year student of BUET’s chemical engineering department.

She was struck by a bullet in June 2002 during a factional clash involving an exchange of gunfire between two groups of BNP-backed student body Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal on the BUET campus.
