RAB arrests six people with foreign firearms

Staff Reporter:

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested six individuals with foreign firearms during a raid in the capital’s Vatara area on Friday.

“Two foreign pistols, two revolvers, and 10 rounds of ammunition were seized during the raid,” Commanding Officer (CO) of RAB-2 battalion Additional DIG Md Khalidul Haque Howlader said at a media briefing held at the RAB media centre in Karwan Bazar in the city on Saturday morning.

The arrestees are Rakibul Islam France, 35, Riazul Islam, 35, Mohammad Kamruzzaman alias Naim, 27, Mohammad Alam, 35, Al Amin, 30, and Mohammad Nayon, 25.

Among them, Rakibul is accused in multiple cases, including murder, arms charges and robbery. The other members are similarly accused in one or multiple cases.

Khalidul Haque said, “The criminals were involved in drug trade, extortion and contract crimes. They brought the firearms from border districts and rented or sold them to other criminals.”

The gang had rented two units of flat in the area to conduct their operations, he added.

The latest raid was part of the ongoing anti-crime campaign.

Since August 5 last year, RAB-2 recovered 71 firearms, 1,440 bullets, 25,000 yaba pills, 1,700 grams of heroin, 350kg of cannabis, 500 bottles of phensedyl and large quantities of foreign liquor. A total of 847 suspects have been arrested during that period.
