Staff Reporter:
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has detected irregularities in the work of beautification and road repairs carried out ahead of the Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus’ visit to Chattogram in May.
Based on a complaint, an ACC team led by Assistant Director Sayed Alam of Chattogram Integrated District Office-1 conducted a drive at the office of Chattogram Road Circle Superintendent Engineer Mohammad Zahed Hossain on Thursday.
The team verified the documents there, but no engineer was present.
According to the complaint, the work was carried out for beautification and repairs from the city’s Oxygen area to Hathazari Bus Stand on the occasion of the visit of the chief adviser to attend the fifth convocation of Chittagong University on 14 May.
Following the inspection, Sayed told the reporters that the work worth Tk1 crore was done through one contractor even before the tender was floated.
Later, through the tender process, another contracting firm got the work again, and it was asked merely to submit the bill.
When the firm owner refused to sign the bill, he received threats from various unknown numbers on Wednesday night. He later filed the complaint with the ACC.
