CDDL sets record in container handling

Staff Reporter:

Chattogram Dry Dock Limited (CDDL) has set a new milestone in the history of Chittagong Port by handling the highest number of containers in a single day at the New-Mooring Container Terminal (NCT).

According to a press release, a total of 5,019 Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) containers were handled in the 24 hours ending at 8:00am on Friday.

Of these, 2,101 TEUs were import containers, while 2,918 TEUs were export containers.

Between 1 and 28 August, a total of 109,217 TEUs were handled, averaging 3,903 TEUs per day, which is over 40% higher than the previous average, read a press release.

An analysis conducted on 26 August revealed that in the first 49 days after assuming operations (7 July–25 August), Bangladesh Navy-run CDDL handled 174,931 TEUs, compared to just 119,276 TEUs handled by the previous operator during the same duration (19 May–6 July).

This registered an increase by 46.66% in container handling.

Mentionable, the NCT had long been operated by private firm Saif Powertec Limited.

After the expiration of Saif Powertec’s contract on 6 July, CDDL officially took over operations on 7 July, as per a directive from the Ministry of Shipping.

Since then, container handling has increased significantly due to efficient management and effective planning.

Sources believe that higher container handling will further accelerate overall port activities.

CDDL’s performance has set such an example that will remain as a benchmark for future operators, they added.
