Five panels are set to decide the fate of top posts in the polls for Jahangirnagar University Central Students Union (JUCSU) and hall unions on 11 September.
Two panels represent last year’s uprising leaders, one panel represents Islami Chhatra Shibir, one panel represents Chhatra Dal, and two others represent leftist student leaders. Many more would contest as independents.
Among the two panels representing last year’s non-political uprising activists, Democratic Students Council, linked to NCP, forms one, while the other is being led by key uprising leader Abdur Rashid Jitu.
Being held after nearly 33 years, the elections, along with parallel polls at Dhaka University on 9 September, are set to be the first litmus test for political stability and security situation ahead of the February general elections.
JU Proctor AKM Rashidul Alam has already asked for army deployment a day before, on and a day after the election date. The university authorities have also banned all forms of public gatherings until after the elections.
