BGB seizes 2 lakh cubic feet of stones in Sylhet

Staff Reporter:

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), in a joint drive with police and Sylhet district administration, seized two lakh cubic feet of illegally stockpiled stones from the border area of Utmachhara in Companiganj upazila on Tuesday.
According to a BGB press release, the operation was carried out in Adarshgram village in the morning, during which the stones were seized.
The drive was led by Commander of Sylhet Battalion (48 BGB) Lt. Col. Md. Nazmul Haque and Execu-tive Magistrate Ebrahim Iqbal Chowdhury.
Lt. Col. Haque said the Utmachhara area is naturally rich in sand and stones and is also known as a tour-ist spot. For the past few years, some local unscrupulous groups have been illegally extracting stones from the area and stockpiling them in Adarshgram for smuggling.
However, due to strict surveillance and patrolling by BGB, smugglers are failing to move the stockpiled stones across the border, he added.
Highlighting BGB’s role, Lt. Col. Haque said Sylhet Battalion (48 BGB) has long been working to en-sure border security, prevent smuggling, maintain law and order, and protect national resources.
