DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (Net): Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei on Wednesday declared an all out war against Israel rejecting US calls for surrender amid ongoing Israeli attacks, cautioning that any military intervention by the United States would lead to “irreparable damage,” according to a statement broadcast on Iranian state television.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s comments were issued through a statement read by a state TV anchor.
It was only the second indication of his presence since the Israeli airstrikes began. His response came after U.S. President Donald Trump, in a social media post, demanded “UNCONDITIONAL SURREN-DER” and warned that while the U.S. is aware of Khamenei’s whereabouts, it has “no plans to kill him, at least not for now.”
Though Trump initially kept a distance from Israel’s surprise offensive last Friday that set off the current crisis, he has recently indicated a possible escalation of U.S. involvement, expressing a desire for “some-thing much bigger” than just a ceasefire. The U.S. has since deployed additional aircraft and naval forces to the region.
In his statement, Khamenei criticized Trump’s “threatening and absurd statements.”
Iranian missile strikes
Over the last six days, Israelis have faced a new kind of threat: a powerful military force launching bal-listic missiles at both civilian areas and critical infrastructure inside Israel.
Visible destruction to residential buildings has been widely reported, but leaks suggest that sensitive military or strategic sites may also have been hit, reports Al Jazeera.
For the first time, the Israeli military has acknowledged that one of its Hermes drones was shot down over Iran.
While images of damage in Iran are circulating, the impact on Israeli civilians is also becoming clear.
Dozens of buildings in Israel have been deemed unsafe and are set to be demolished.
More than 1,300 people have been displaced and are currently staying in hotels due to homes that are no longer habitable. Authorities have received over 18,000 compensation claims related to the destruction.
This level of disruption is unlike anything Israeli society has previously faced.
Past conflicts with groups such as Hamas or Hezbollah, even during periods of intense fighting, were perceived as more manageable.
This time, the scale and nature of the threat represent something entirely new.
Al Jazeera continues its coverage from Jordan following a ban on its operations in Israel and the occu-pied West Bank.
