Only election can restore true democracy: Rizvi

Staff Reporter:

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has laid emphasis on holding the parliamentary election as soon as possible to restore true democracy in Bangladesh.

“Delaying the polls under the pretext of reforms will not be appropriate. Only the election can restore true democracy in the country,” he told reporters after paying homage to Language Movement martyrs on behalf of the party at the Central Shaheed Minar in the city, marking ‘Shaheed Dibash’ (Martyrs’ Day) and International Mother Language Day.

Rizvi said, “Pro-people politicians never flee and the shining example has been set by ‘country leader’ Begum Khaleda Zia. You witnessed that although she faced persecution for years, she did not leave the state and its countrymen. This is the difference between the BNP and them [the fascist Awami League].”

Demanding a free and fair election, the BNP leader said the next parliamentary election must be held first before any other polls.

“Over the past 17 years, there have been attempts to destroy political forces and parties. We hope that the interim government will hold the general election first as part of the political process,” he said.
