AL-linked tycoons siphoned-off $180bl in last 15 years: Fakhrul

Staff Reporter:

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has blamed the Awami League-linked tycoons for siphoning off $180 billion during the party’s 15 years of administration.

They laundered $16 billion per year on average abroad and the amount stood at $180 billion in the last 15 years, said the BNP leader while addressing a programme in Dinajpur on Friday.

The country’s overall economy has been passing through a critical juncture as the fascist Awami League looted all assets and laundered those abroad, destroying the economy during its 15 years of rule, he alleged.

Stressing the need for adopting pragmatic policies to reshape the economy, he said, “We all, including the young leaders, will have to work together to take our economy to the right path.”

Blasting the defeated Sheikh Hasina-led autocratic government, Fakhrul said they materialised fascism in the country by taking all state organs and power in their grip.

“We came out of the fascism and will now rebuild a democratic country with the help of the young leaders,” he expressed his optimism.

About the people’s voting rights, Fakhrul said the current generation could not exercise their franchise in elections for the last three terms.

“Our fight for democracy has come to an end, but we have failed to steer the country in the right direction through national unity,” he said.

Citing the failures of the political leadership, he said Bangladesh has not yet been turned into a peaceful and progressive country in the last 53 years.

The politicians speak of democracy without practicing it, he said, adding that repeated attempts to undermine democracy have prevented the emergence of robust democratic institutions in the country.

Regarding the dissonance among political parties, he said the country’s existing political parties are engaged in opposing and working against one another.

“If we can enhance our tolerance, we can move forward and establish true democracy. A new opportunity has emerged in the country as our sons and political workers have sacrificed their lives after being victimised of extreme inhuman torture over the years,” said the BNP leader.
