Constitution must be amended for credible polls: Moyeen

Staff Reporter:

BNP senior leader Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan on Saturday said the constitution must be amended for ensur-ing a fair and credible national election in the country as per the desire of the people.
“The government is unwilling to hold a fair election because they know people will not vote for them. So, they talk about the constitution as an excuse. The constitution needs to be amended for a credible election and for restoring people’s confidence. It’s now the demand of the people,” he said.
Speaking at the launching program of a new platform “Swadhinata Oikay Parishad” at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity, the BNP leader also said the constitution was written for the people of Bangladesh, but people are not for the constitution.
Dr Moyeen, a BNP standing committee member, said the constitution should be amended in line with what the people of Bangladesh want. “If the people of Bangladesh want, the constitution can be amended even 10 times. The constitution is not the Bible,” he said.
Stating that the constitution was formulated for the welfare of the people, he recalled that Awami League amended the constitution in 11 minutes in parliament to establish one-party Baksal, destroying democracy. “In fact, Awami League never believes in democracy.”
However, the BNP leader said their party works for the welfare of the people and not only to go to pow-er.
At the end of the program, Dr Moyeen, on behalf of BNP acting chairman, provided eid gifts to the des-titute.
