Protesters clash with police, AL men in capital’s Uttara

Staff Reporter:

Students clashed with Amami League (AL) men and police personnel in the capital’s Uttara-11 sector on Friday, while protesting against the killings of fellow students during the recent quota reform movement.

Around 4pm students were demonstrating in front of Milestone College while police personnel and helmet-wearing AL activists were deployed in front of the Zamzam Tower.

At one point AL activists attacked the students with sticks to disperse them. The students resisted resulting in a chase and counter-chase. Police intervened with tear gas and sound grenades forcing the students to flee to different alleys.

An hour later, the students tried to return to the main street again, but had to retreat in the face of another volley of tear gas, sound grenades as well as rubber bullets.

At 7.15pm, BM Farman Ali, officer-in-charge of Uttara West Police Station, told reporters that the situation remained under police control and stable.
