A total of 1.6kg of gold worth Tk 1.28 crore were recovered from a baggage conveyor belt at Chattogram Shah Amanat International Airport on Friday.
Sources said a team of National Security Intelligence (NSI) and Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) of the airport conducted a drive at International Arrival Baggage Conveyor Belt No. 2 of the airport around 9:30 am.
Gold items weighing 1,631 kilograms of 24 carats were recovered from inside a cigarette packet on the conveyor belt.
The intelligence officials suspected that the gold bars came through flight G9-526 of Air Arabia Airlines coming from Sharjah.
Revenue Officer Md Al Amin Prodhan of CIID Chattogram Regional Office said the packet had 14 gold bars, each weighing 116 grams, wrapped tactfully with silver colour scotch tapes.
The market value of the gold is estimated around Tk 1.28 crore, he said.
