A total of eight people have lost their lives in different fire incidents on four passenger trains in the aftermath of political unrest in the country since October 28 last year.
On December 19, four passengers of Mohonganj Express, including a mother and child, were burnt to death in Dhaka’s Tejgaon.
Besides, there have been 19 cases of arson and eight incidents of cocktail explosions along the railway lines, according to the Ministry of Railways.
On 28 October, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and several other like-minded parties organised a grand rally in Dhaka demanding the resignation of the incumbent government and a fresh election under a non-partisan caretaker government. The rally was foiled amid clashes with the members of law enforcement agencies, leaving three including one policeman dead.
Since then, BNP and their allies have been on the streets with a series of demonstration programmes, including hartals, blockades, and calls for non-cooperation.
