SC cancels Salahuddin’s candidature in Ctg-4

Staff Reporter:

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) yesterday cancelled it earlier order that allowed Chattogram-4 independent candidate Mohammad Salahuddin to contest the January 7 polls, as the aspir-ant was found concealing information that he is still serving as a government employee.
Justice M Enayetur Rahim of Supreme Court Chamber Judge Court passed the order, also imposing cost of Taka one lakh against Salahuddin.
The apex court also ordered Director General of Directorate General of Health Directorate and Chatto-gram Civil Surgeon to conduct probe against Salahuddin, working as a health assistant at Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex, and take departmental action.
The Election Commission (EC) earlier cancelled the nomination paper of Mohammad Salahuddin over the inconsistencies in information. The EC and the High Court subsequently cancelled his appeal over the matter. The Appellate Division, however, on December 21 allowed his plea, asking the EC to allot him an election symbol.
The EC on December 27 filed a petition against the SC order, saying the candidate had concealed infor-mation about his occupation, posing as a businessman in the nomination paper.
