Calling upon the media professionals to be more careful in practicing objective journalism, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has said that the mass media makes people sometimes perplexed in various aspects.
CEC Awal made these remarks following a meeting held at his Election Commission office in Dhaka with the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission on Thursday.
“Our mass media should be more responsible in publishing objective news over the election and politics. Its positive role is imperative. The statement articulated by the National Human Rights Commission chairman. We expressed solidarity with his statement,” Awal said.
Responding to a query, the CEC said that incidents like violence, chase and counter chase and posters torn up took place more or less in different parts of the country ahead of the January 7 national election.
“It doesn’t seem that such violent activities happened much. But I am not saying that the violence did not happen at all,” the CEC told the questioner.
There are few days left for the election and the commission is uninterruptedly communicating with the respective officials at field level across the country to prevent such unlawful incidents, he said.
He said there will be polling agents inside all polling centres and it will have to be ensured that no unauthorised person can enter the voting centres.
“We would welcome the mass media if it can capture pictures of any irregularities and then air it,” he said.
