Law Minister for independent, corruption-free judiciary

Staff reporter:

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman has said an independent, strong and corruption-free judiciary must be established to ensure justice for people and restore public confidence in the judicial system.

He expressed hope that young lawyers would help uphold the dignity of the judiciary through their merit, integrity and professionalism.

The law minister made the remarks as the chief guest at an orientation programme for newly enrolled members of the Dhaka Bar Association this afternoon.

“There is no shortcut to success in the legal profession, and lawyers must establish themselves through merit, wisdom, perseverance and hard work. A person in distress turns to a lawyer with trust and confidence after seeking help from Almighty Allah. Therefore, upholding a client’s trust is an ethical responsibility of every lawyer,” he said.

Asaduzzaman said his ministry has announced an allocation of Tk 50 crore this year for training lawyers.

He added that discussions had been held with the Commerce Minister on amending the Companies Act to make it mandatory for every company to appoint a lawyer, with a view to expanding employment opportunities for legal professionals in the private sector.

Highlighting the government’s commitments, the law minister said the government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, was determined to establish good governance and ensure justice for all killings, injustices and wrongdoings.

Referring to the loss of more than 4,500 fellow activists during over 16 years of movements, the disappearance of more than 700 people and the filing of false and fictitious cases against over six million party leaders and activists, he said the government was working to ensure justice for these alleged injustices.

The programme was presided over by Dhaka Bar Association President Advocate Anwar Zahid Bhuiyan while former and current leaders of the association, judicial officers, senior lawyers and newly enrolled advocates were also present.
