Govt to ensure fair salt prices

Staff Reporter:

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed yesterday said the government is taking steps to ensure fair prices for salt farmers based on production costs, aiming to achieve self-sufficiency in the country’s salt sector and protect local producers.
Speaking after a high-level meeting at the Secretariat chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the minister said the Ministry of Agriculture is assessing production expenses to guarantee fair returns for farmers.
“The government is also reviewing the demand for industrial and edible salt to determine whether im-ports are necessary,” he said.
Decisions will be made after analysing relevant data in line with the Prime Minister’s directives, he added.
On border security and the post-election situation in India’s West Bengal, Ahmed said the Border Guard Bangladesh have been put on maximum alert, maintaining round-the-clock surveillance to prevent illegal infiltration and maintain stability along the border.
Referring to social media reports alleging minority persecution in West Bengal, the minister said many claims are based on old or fabricated videos.
He added that neither the Home Ministry nor the Foreign Ministry has found evidence confirming such allegations or any direct impact on Bangladesh.
Ahmed urged people not to be influenced by rumors and misinformation circulating on social media.
