Govt weighs DP World proposals, prioritises national interest: minister

Staff Reporter:
Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam has said some aspects of proposals submitted by DP World for operating the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) at Chattogram Port are positive, but the government will prioritise state and public interests before taking a decision.
“DP World has put forward several proposals, and aspects of some of them are positive. We may face losses in some areas compared to the current revenue we get from the port. However, when viewed in gross terms, the losses do not appear significant. The government is evaluating the matter with due consideration,” he said.
The minister made the remarks while talking to journalists at an event held at the National Maritime Institute in the city on Saturday.
“We have some bargaining issues regarding how we can maximise the positive aspects for the benefit of the state. Negotiations are ongoing,” he said.
“We are working on it. I have personally discussed the matter with the Prime Minister three times. Whatever decision is taken will be in line with the public trust. The government, elected with a strong majority, will act in the best interest of the country and its people,” he added.
Regarding the Bangladeshi vessel remained stranded in Persian Gulf, he said diplomatic efforts are underway regarding the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) vessel Banglar Joyjatra, which has been unable to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
“We are treating the matter with importance and working diplomatically to resolve it as quickly as possible,” the minister added.
