AG wants to use his office to ensure access to justice

Staff Reporter:
Attorney General (AG) Barrister Md. Ruhul Quddus Kajol has said he wants to use the office of the state’s top law officer as a means to help people to get justice.
Country’s 18th Attorney General said to a group of journalists that the position carries significant constitutional responsibility and importance.
“The office of the AG is the highest law office of the state. It represents the state in all courts and primarily conducts cases on behalf of the government in the Supreme Court,” he said.
Speaking about ensuring justice for citizens, he added “This country belongs to all of us. We want its welfare. I will make my utmost effort to ensure that people receive justice through an inde-pendent judicial system. I want to use this office to support people in obtaining justice.”
Responding to a question about forming a permanent attorney service for handling state cases, he said it is a policy matter of the government.
He said the AG’s office would be more citizen-friendly as both the parties in court are represented by lawyers including the state.
However, avoiding unnecessary harassment or delays would be a key priority.
Regarding allegations against some law officers, he acknowledged that complaints had been heard in the past, some of which may have merit.
“Those with credible allegations will be reviewed,” he said adding that “Many competent officers are currently serving and everybody know about their performance.”
He also noted that the experience of the current law minister would be helpful in carrying out his responsibilities. He plans to discuss with the Chief Justice measures needed to meet the expecta-tions of justice seekers.
As Chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council by virtue of his office, he said efforts would be made to ensure timely bar examinations without complications or delays.
On his professional journey, he said he has consistently focused on his studies since student life, considering it his greatest strength. He described his appointment as Attorney General as a signifi-cant professional recognition and pledged to uphold its dignity.
He further said he would remain fully impartial in discharging his duties and would not allow po-litical considerations to influence his work.
Barrister Md. Ruhul Quddus Kajol, a senior lawyer of the Supreme Court, was appointed as the Attorney General on March 25.
