A tribunal in Dhaka on Thursday sentenced a man to life imprisonment in a case filed over the rape of a woman after luring with the promise of marriage in the capital’s Kafrul Police Station area.
Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict, also fining the convict Tk200,000.
The convict, Md Jahangir Hossain, 32, was present in court during the pronouncement of the verdict and was later sent back to jail with a conviction warrant.
According to the case statement, the victim had been acquainted with Jahangir Hossain. Her husband had died around 11 months before the incident. Jahangir frequently visited her residence, and at one stage they developed a romantic relationship taking advantage of their prior acquaintance.
On the night of 15 January 2018, Jahangir allegedly raped the woman at a house in Ibrahimpur under Kafrul Police Station. When the victim attempted to disclose the matter to others, the accused promised to marry her. On the same assurance, he raped her several more times.
As a result, the woman became pregnant, but Jahangir later refused to marry her. In February 2019, the victim filed the rape case against him.
After completing the investigation, police submitted the charge sheet against the accused on 25 November of the same year.
The investigation report stated that a DNA test of the victim’s newborn confirmed Jahangir Hossain as the biological father. The tribunal recorded testimonies from five witnesses during the trial.
