The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is working to uncover the mystery behind a “conspiratorial gathering” of Awami League activists in Bhatara area last month, said Public Relations Wing Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman.
The police are working on a priority basis to detain the culprits behind the meeting of AL, which has been banned as a political party, Talebur Rahman said at press briefing at the DMP media centre on Friday.
He also denied any security threat exists in August, the month of last year’s uprising, from Awami League or any other group.
The police observed multiple attempts by different groups to disrupt law and order over the past year. In this backdrop, the law enforcers are on alert and continuing drives to detain criminals and anarchists, the deputy commissioner told reporters.
DMP has taken sufficient preparations and has enough capabilities to prevent any untoward incident in August, he asserted.
Over the past 24 hours, police detained eight members of Awami League and its affiliates from different parts of the capital as part of efforts to pre-empt the implementation of conspiracies, he claimed.
Police are also taking the utmost care to ensure none are harassed in the drives or arbitrarily detained without grounds, Talebur Rahman said.
On 8 August, a group of Awami League activists met at a convention hall in Bhatara area allegedly to discuss implementing a “destabilizing plot.” A woman rented the convention hall in the name of arranging foreign travel for applicants.
On a tip-off, police detained 22 people involved with the meeting. On 13 July, a case was filed in this connection. Army Major Sadeque was allegedly involved in the plot to provide military training to Awami League saboteurs. He has since been put under Army custody for quizzing.
