Police arrested a man early Monday on charge of killing his wife, barely 16 hours after her body was found in the capital’s Bhatara area.
The arrestee was identified as Kamruzzaman, 30. He was picked up at around 3:30 am from Sonamura in Brahmanbaria’s Bijoynagar upazila, DC media of DMP Talebur Rahman said on Monday.
Bhatara thana police received a phone call through 999 on July 5 morning. The caller informed the po-lice that the body of an unidentified young woman was found in the east unit of the fourth floor of a six-storey building in Khilbarirtek.
Based on the information, a team from Bhatara police station went to the spot and recovered the body and then sent the body to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem. The police ‘using technology, identified the victim as Tamanna Akter.
Her mother, Ambia Khatun, subsequently filed a murder case with Bhatara Police Station.
According to preliminary interrogation, Kamruzzaman married Tamanna three years ago. The couple, both garment-factory workers, moved into the Khilbarirtek flat around 9 pm on July 4.
Police say Kamruzzaman told them an argument broke out around 11 pm, during which he allegedly strangled Tamanna and smothered her with a pillow before fleeing.
Legal proceedings are under way, police added.
