Power cuts would remain at a tolerable level this summer with no discrimination between rural and urban areas, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan said on Saturday.
“We will make efforts to keep load-shedding at a manageable level during the summer, but it will not be possible completely to get rid of power cuts. Necessary measures will be taken to address the situation,” he said at a seminar held at Bidyut Bhaban in Dhaka.
“Currently, we produce 16,000MW of electricity, with 179MW attributed to power cuts. However, our target is to generate 18,000MW of electricity. To meet this goal, we are trying to import additional LNG and coal,” the adviser said, adding that the use of fuel oil would be minimised.
Fouzul said, “At any time, a major power plant could go out of order since such incidents take place frequently during the summer. Keeping that in mind, we will prioritise LNG imports followed by coal.”
