Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has underscored the need for reforms, the trial of fascists and the establishment of an impartial electoral process must be ensured before holding the next general election.
The February 2026 deadline for the election is not harder, but if the three conditions are met, the election could be held before or after this time, said the Jamaat leader while addressing a press conference in Dhaka on Thursday.
He also called upon all political parties to extend their all-out cooperation to the incumbent government to carry out the reform agenda successfully.
“The national election will be held like the previous ones if we don’t sincerely extend our cooperation to the government and we will be held responsible,” he said.
The sooner the political parties coordinate with the government, the sooner the election will be held, Jamaat Ameer said, underscoring the need for boosting mutual respect among the country’s existing political parties.
He addressed the media following his recent visit to several European countries.
During his visit, he met BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, now residing in the UK for treatment purposes, but did not hold any talks over the upcoming election or the country’s prevailing situation, he said.
