The Bangladesh Police Service Association has strongly condemned remarks made by Supreme Court lawyer and former army officer Barrister M Sarwar Hossain, who accused Bagerhat Superintendent of Police Md Touhidul Arif of corruption.
A video circulating on social media shows Barrister Hossain claiming that SP Arif was involved in corrupt practices amounting to around BDT 100 million, citing various alleged irregularities. He also alleged that the Inspector General of Police takes no action against corrupt officers within the force.
In a statement, the Police Service Association said that any police officer found to be involved in wrongdoing is subject to departmental action following proper investigation. It added that inquiries into allegations against several officers, including some district SPs, are currently underway.
The association said that making such public allegations without evidence amounts to defamation and expressed disappointment that a respected lawyer would label a serving officer as corrupt without proper inquiry. It also criticised the remarks involving the police chief, calling them false and unacceptable.
“Such statements damage public confidence, undermine morale, and tarnish the reputation of the police force,” the association said.
The Police Service Association reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and contributing positively to the country’s development efforts.
